Peel to perform as Peel in Austin theater

Despite the distraction of their debut album hitting stores next month, the members of Peel have been doing breathing exercises and honing their theatrical craft for an upcoming production of the play I Am Not Tartuffe, in which they will star as themselves, performing the music of the band Peel.

Written and directed by Jonathon Morgan, I Am Not Tartuffe is the latest production by the Austin dance, theatre, music and performance art collective Yellow Tape Construction Co and also features "evil French art film" by the SXSW-bound filmmakers at Teacup Picto-films.

In the play, France is God and decides to wage war on America in a moment of freedom-hating existential crisis. Captain Jesus helps defend the American way of life with the rock music of Austin indie rock giants Peel.

When asked about their "method" for getting into character before curtain, Peel keyboardist/singer Allison Moore said, "We'll probably do our usual pre-show routine of bickering, losing a guitar cable, irritating the sound guy and squandering our drink tickets. Either that or some light calisthenics."

The play opens March 15th and will run every Thursday, Friday & Saturday at 8 p.m. through March 31st at Play! Theatre. Tickets are $15 at www.yellowtape.org and at the door 30 minutes before curtain. And to encourage live blogging, patrons who bring their laptops get $2 off the price of admission.
