KOOP & Sweatbox building gutted by second fire

Sweatbox, KOOPUnbelievable. With a benefit show and pledge drive planned this weekend to help KOOP recover from the fire that crippled the radio station on January 6th, a second fire early Saturday morning kicked out its crutches.

The four-alarm fire started in the shitty dance club next door, burning it to the ground and damaging its neighbors to both sides, the vacant Copper Tank Brewery and the KOOP/Sweatbox building, in the process.

Fortunately for Sweatbox, the January 6th fire had already forced them to move the studio equipment to Nevele Eleven Studios on South First Street, where Sweatbox resumed business temporarily, prior to the second fire.

KOOP... not so lucky. Although the radio station had planned to find new residence, they continued to broadcast out of the building at 5th and San Jacinto at the time of the fire and apparently lost all studio equipment in the blaze. The station has insurance but faces great financial hurdles in replacing equipment and building a new studio, plus KOOP anticipates their rent doubling in a new location. Contribute here.

The Statesman has the story and photos, plus News 8 Austin offers another article and some amazing video coverage of the fire in progress. The KOOP website has more photos and information.
