Peek-A-Boo: Bands: The1-4-5s: Summer '96 Tour

The 1-4-5s 1996 Rock Tour Diary (continued)

Having conquered the West Coast, the 1-4-5s retreated to Austin for a little R & R, but it wasn't long before their long-time associates from Houston, Junior Varsity, got them back "on the road again..."

Highly skilled musicians like the 1-4-5s need not keep in training during the off months, but imagine Lady Ace's surprise when she finds out that JV tricked the 1-4-5s into an impromptu mini-tour to Louisiana. Of course, the 1-4-5s are all professionals, and Lady Ace takes the news in a calm, rational manner. As usual, a quick practice in the car on the way to the show gets the 1-4-5s ready to rock.

The 1-4-5s sometimes like to go "incognito," and free themselves of their rock n' roll fame and excesses. Here in one of their rare candid photos, we see the men and women behind the helmets; just regular joes who enjoy a game of pool like everyone else.

The crowd goes wild as Sean "Praying McMantis" McManus rips out another nitro-fueled guitar solo. The Junior Varsity signature guitar solo has been known to cause riots in some parts of Bangladesh and was banned from most of Idaho due to "suggestive" content. New Orleans will never be the same.

Once Junior Varsity gets the crowd warmed up, the anticipated 1-4-5s rush to the stage for another stunningly tight live show. Of course the show is a brilliant success, and if it werenąt for the professional bodyguards lining the stage, this classic rock moment would have been marred by scores of fans leaping upon our helmeted heroes, clutching and clawing for just a hair or scrap of their jackets.

The show is over, but the rock never stops. Even after drinking for 12 hours in strange bars, losing all their money on a gambling boat, forcing down coffee and beignets at 6am, and then making the return trip without sleep, the bands still have a little boogie woogie in their step. They are truly the "Monsters of Rock."
